Manaiakalani 2019 - KPMG - Last Day

The task given to us was to celebrate and present a screencast of our journey on the MIT 2019 programme.

Here is the presentation and the first attempt of my rewarding and challenging experience.

Screencast of Presentation

Manaiakalani 2019 - KPMG - Last Day

What a sad day today!

The last of our getting together.

The morning began by connecting and reflecting.

Prior to the session, I was able to reflect and answer the following questions.

  1. Where have you got to
  2. How has your project impacted on the School, Cluster, and Manaiakalani
  3. Would you do the same thing again with the superpower of hindsight?
  4. What has worked well in 2019?
I have prepared a slide presentation answering these questions and I have also been able to celebrate and showcase the journey and experience of being involved in the MIT journey in 2019.

Here is the presentation. I will shortly create and share a screencast of the presentation

Manaiakalani: Toolkit Completed

Following our last KPMG session, I have made the final changes to the toolkit.

I have also started my slide presentation and beginning to put all the pieces together for the big event in October.

The journey and experience has been like the movie 'Cool Runnings' there have been the starts, crashes and more importantly the support and encouragement from a number of people from Manaiakalani and Wesley Primary School.

Finally, the dragon has been slayed and the toolkit has been completed. Financial Enterprise

Manaiakalani: Wananga

Following our last KPMG session, we were advised of the Wananga in October. The 7-minute presentation with '20 images for 20 seconds' started to get me thinking and preparing for the Wananga

Things to consider in the presentation are:
  • What: what was the problem?
  • Who was it a problem for?
  • What did you do in the process you went through
  • How did you come up with the design you ultimately took to creation and implementation
  • What did you come up with finally?
  • How does it work?
  • How successfully is it meeting your original problem?
As I begin to draft and plan my presentation, I start to see and acknowledge the journey I started at the beginning of the year.

I continue to revert back to the following questions at the beginning of the MIT program.

  1. Is the tool something that could NOT have been done with digital technologies?
  2. Is the Innovation designed to accelerate our priority learners' achievement outcomes?
  3. Does my inquiry support the cluster kaupapa goals?
As I redefine my tool and put the presentation together I strongly believe I am able to answer these questions. The finish line is near and the I am able to 'sly the dragon'.

Manaiakalani Inquiry: KPMG

On Monday the 12th August we had our third collaborative meeting at the KPMG Office in Auckland.

What a GREAT and AMAZING day!

Prior to the meeting, we received an email with the following questions for us to ponder and consider when making our sales pitch.

They were:

  • What is the tool/concept/idea?
  • How have you tested it? What did the testers think?
  • Why would we want to use it?
  • What is it able to do?
  • How has it evolved and what changes have you had to make? How and why?
  • What do the learners think of it?
  • Is it making a difference or will it make a difference? How do you know?
  • What has driven you in the development?
  • How is it different from other similar tools?
  • What does your team (us) think?
The presentation was like a 'dragon's den' with Dorothy, Anne and the MIT participants probing, poking and posing questions about the tool.

The opportunity to participate in this environment allowed me to go away and make further adjustments and refinement to the tool. I can see the finish line!

Manaiakalani: Prototype 2

After attending the EdTech Summit in Sydney.

I started to explore and ponder the idea(s) and conversations I had with the officials and participants from the New South Wales Department of Education

Representatives from the NSW of Education spoke strongly about using Google Sites for the teachers around the state to place their teaching and learning on the site. Teachers are able to access resources, activities, and materials within their curriculum area.  As one official said "why re-invent the wheel and spending many hours of teaching time creating teaching material when the Department can help and support teachers i.e. in Science on a unit of work.

Also, I attended a number of workshops delivered by a number of teachers from both Australia and New Zealand who spoke highly about the advantages and benefits of using Google Sites.

This allowed me to ponder and reevaluate the journey of my tool and the decision was made to change my prototype and use the vehicle of 'Financial Literacy' a real-life context for my priority learners in Mathematics and use a Google site to drive my teaching and learning for the students to use problem-solving to progress and accelerate their learning in the subject.

The holidays were used to create and develop the site.

The site will be shared with the other 2 teachers who will deliver the programme in Term 3. I will also seek student's voice and await the next KPMG meeting with the other MIT participants in August.

EdTech Summit: Sydney

Attended the following summit from July 8 - 9 2019 in Sydney.

EdTech Summit Sydney 2019

Refer document for information and links of sessions attended.

EdTech Summit Notes

The sessions had many opportunities to explore further and implement into my teaching and learning. Also building relationships with fellow teaching professionals from Australia was useful and purposeful and further emphasized the close working relationships between our teachers in Australia and New Zealand.

We were also asked to present at the Summit. My presentation was on Google sheets and displaying and presentating data using data validation, conditional formatting and pivot tables. Although the session only had 6 participants, the 90 minute session allowed my passion and interest for data using sheets to be shared with others. The feedback and responses received was as follows:-

Great to work on sheets again and go over some skills that I haven’t used for awhile.
Using data formatting to colour code data and creating pivot tables.
Pivot tables are very useful!
Thanks for creating the sheets for us to practice on. Was super helpful to have a play on.
Thanks so much. This novice learnt a lot so thanks.
Very personable presenter who was happy to work with the audience on what they needed

Evaluation Submissions: 4
Average Rating: 4.92
Did you learn something new (skill, perspective, idea, strategy)?: 5.00
Was the session or presentation engaging (dynamic, high energy, hands-on, differentiated, interactive, fun)? : 5.00
Rate the overall quality:: 4.75

Each session attended made me more aware of possibilities to use when I return home and I could either use and pass onto others to help them.

One of the many highlights was attending the Google office in Sydney. It was inspirational and a wonderful opportunity to go inside and see Google. WOW!

The trip gave me a new enthusiasm to further explore slying that dragon (toolkit) and further be inspired and motivated to change the toolkit that has caused so much pleasure and anxiety over the many months starting the MIT journey.

I enjoyed spending time with ALL the MIT participants in Australia Sydney and this provided further opportunities for all of us to build on the relationships and friendships developed in New Zealand since starting the MIT journey in 2019.

Thanks to the Trust, Gerhard and David for the experience and journey.

Manaiakalani Inquiry : KPMG

On Monday the 20th of May we had our second collaborative meeting at the KPMG Office in Auckland.

The journey started with us sharing what had worked well for us, and what had not worked well. This still has a considerable impact on my thinking and my toolkit every time we start the morning like this.

The day progressed with us getting into groups and sharing our inquiry by playing Catalyst Game.
This further created further self reflection and where to next with the toolkit. The dragon I am slying seems to get bigger and bigger.

We explored The-7-principles-of-learning and this further emphasized the importance of these aligning with the toolkit .

Thanks to KPMG for the venue and the opportunity to work in a corporate work environment

Manaiakalani : Prototype

Following an eventful and hectic Term, managed to use the break time to start to sly that dragon that had been breathing a furious fire during the 3 day Manaiakalani Hui and the 1 day KPMG workshop.

Below is the first of many adjustments, refinements and tweaking of the prototype developed to solve the problem of low achievement in Mathematics with the Year 6 students.

The prototype has been used with the students when solving mathematical problems in context using the process of PPMS. The Problem, Plan, Method and Solution framework (see below), is the start of my inquiry.

I have shared the framework not only with my students, but I have asked for feedback from my work colleague at school, my coach who is the Principal and one other person outside the organisation who is in a teaching role. There honest and professional feedback has posed further questions and adjustments to the framework.

More importantly I have used the framework with those students who have been identified has my target audience. Although its in its infancy stage of development, I will continue to seek feedback and clarification from those who will help and support me on this journey. I still have many unanswered questions, BUT I am starting to remove myself from that learning pit ... still crawling!

Manaiakalani Inquiry : KPMG

On Monday the 25th of March we had our first collaborative meeting at the KPMG Office in Auckland.

The journey started with us sharing what had worked well for us, and what had not worked well.

The day progressed with us getting into groups and sharing our inquiry with others. The feedback was useful and it started another journey of questions and self reflection of our own inquiries.

We then shared our inquiries and we had to defend and explain our inquiries, with further scrutiny with the following questions:

Prototype of solution questions
What was the achievement challenge?
What was your purpose in designing this tool?
What were the gaps you identified in your prototype?
What is the point of difference with other tools already being used? Why yours?
How is this tool/approach/process going to have an impact on student achievement?
As a result of the feedback, you received today who else do you need in your team? What else do you need to do with your design?
What is the weak point or link in your design thinking process?

The feedback and the questions have made me go away and think about developing my prototype. There are more questions than answers at the moment and I feel like I am at the bottom of the learning pit. I will use the break to develop and draft my prototype so I can see what impact it will have on my students in Term 2. I am slying the dragon and it seems to be getting bigger and bigger every time we meet.

Thanks to KPMG for the venue and the opportunity to work in a corporate work environment

Manaiakalani Beachside Hui: Design Thinking

What a intensive and thought provoking weekend. It has pushed my thinking and feeling like the bottom of the learning pit. Was able to spend time and have discussions with other colleagues about their inquiry and considerable energy and debate was had about adjusting our inquiry problem. The 3 day event has made me fully understand and appreciate the design thinking process. The honest feedback and deliberate acts of role plays and made me more determined to consider and review my inquiry. It has been hard, although the discussions and professional conversations with other MIT participants and the facilitators will mean I have two weeks before we all do it again. This time we meet in Auckland for one day.  I have had time to ponder and discuss my inquiry with the 'Who'(s) that will help and support in my journey. I have made contact with one of those who and will await the discussion and catch-up with them to further support and facilitate my design thinking inquiry. I will not give up and it has made me more determined to be creative, innovative and resilient to be successful.
A BIG THANK YOU to all those at Manaiakalani for their support in the programme.
